In light of the horrific school shooting in Florida, we have received numerous calls and emails from concerned parents and guardians wanting to know what measures Albuquerque Public Schools takes to keep its students and staff safe.

 

As Superintendent Reedy stated in a message posted to APS.edu and social media sites and shared with employees, we have asked all of our schools to review their site safety plans which include detailed instructions for a host of possible emergency situations including an active shooter on campus.

 

Here is some information we can share about how we address school safety:

  • Our school safety plans include site and school-specific instructions relevant to each individual school, depending on the design and layout of the building.
  • We require schools to practice lockdown, shelter-in-place and evacuation drills according to these site-specific plans during the school year.
  • In all emergency scenarios, we remind our students and staff to be responsive and follow the directions of all public safety responders.
  • Fortunately for APS, we have our own Police Department that works closely with the Albuquerque Police Department and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. We have police and security officers assigned to many of our schools, and we have field officers who respond to incidences at all others.
  • Any time a student or staff member sees a suspicious person on campus or encounters a person who is being disruptive, they are asked to contact a police or safety officer or administrator.
  • Visitors to our schools are expected to check in at the front office and wear a visitor’s badge while on campus.
  • We have security cameras in all of our schools.
  • We take seriously every threat or rumor of a threat to students, staff or school. We conduct immediate investigations and take necessary disciplinary action.
  • Anyone who hears of a possible threat to a school is encouraged to contact a school administrator or police. The APS Police Department can be reached at 505-243-7712.
  • We do not discuss disciplinary actions because we are required by law to protect the privacy of all students, including students who may have made threats. However, we can say that students who make threats face disciplinary action that could include suspension and/or expulsion.

We all have a role to play in ensuring our schools continue to be a safe place for learning, and it is incumbent on all of us to be vigilant and supportive of one another. Remember, if you see or hear something, say something. You can contact APS School Police at 505-243-7712.

Governor Bent Elementary School is thrilled to receive the $25,000 grant from Alliance Data to fund our Community Literacy Room. The initiative will provide literacy resources to enhance and target literacy skills with our 1st and 2nd grade students. We have partnered with our community and have 19 dedicated literacy volunteers who will read and write with a student once a week.

Dear GBES Families,

 

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful time with your family during the winter break. We are excited to have the students back to the 2nd part of the school year.

 

Before the break, we applied for a highly competitive grant with the APS Educational Foundation for a Community Literacy Program. The grant will focus on literacy and bring in weekly volunteers to read with our 1st and 2nd-grade students. Last week, we were informed our grant proposal was selected and will receive $25,000!!!!!

 

We are doing some amazing things at Governor Bent, and I welcome you to be part of our work! If you would like to volunteer for the program, please stop in! At Governor Bent, we are committed to providing high-quality and student-centered instruction and always looking for ways to being in initiatives like to Community Literacy Program for our students.

As part of Governor Susana Martinez’s initiative to provide a reading book to each first grade student, Arbordale Publishing is making available for free, 140 eBooks to all New Mexico elementary students and their families through December 31, 2018

Indian Education Program

 

Students in Indian Ed classes are learning about the effect of mental/emotional states on brain development. Did you know that positive mental states like gratitude and optimism make our brains more receptive to learning? We’re starting the new year with a new tradition. We now begin our classes by telling one thing we’re grateful for and one thing we’re looking forward to. It’s a great way to connect as a group and get ready to learn together.

 

Speaking of gratitude, I want to thank the students and families who helped make the last two months so enriching and memorable. Thank you to all of our students and parents who shared morning announcements for Native American Heritage month, to Darrian and Mylan and Little Bear Necklace for an amazing Rock Your Mocs Day Powwow, to the parents who volunteered as chaperones for our 4th and 5th grade field trips to Petroglyph National Monument, and to all of our families for everything you do to support your children’s education! In October, we have had eight family events focused on academics, fitness & attendance and community engagement! This is my second year at Governor Bent and I have seen a significant increase in the of participation in our events! We are always looking for volunteers in our school! November is time to reflect and be thankful! As I reflect, I am truly honored to be part of the Governor Bent Community!  Rock Your Mocs

 

         At Governor Bent

 

Wednesday, November 15, 2017

 

Rock Your Mocs was founded by Jessica “Jaylyn” Atsye of Laguna Pueblo on November 15, 2011, as a way for Native American and Indigenous Peoples to stand together worldwide, while recognizing their Tribal individuality.

 

This cultural empowerment initiative is held annually during November which is also National Native American Heritage Month in the U.S.A. “It’s easy to participate by wearing moccasins to school, to work or wherever your day takes you. Or if a person doesn’t own mocs, can’t wear mocs, or perhaps their Tribe didn’t wear mocs, they may wear a Turquoise Awareness Ribbon instead.”*

 

We will be joining the celebration again this year at Governor Bent on Wednesday, November 15. Native American students will receive a Turquoise Awareness Ribbon as a gift. It will be theirs to wear if they wish and to keep. They may also participate by wearing their moccasins, Native clothing, T-shirts, jewelry, belts, etc. (with their family’s permission).

 

I am excited to announce that this year’s celebration will feature a powwow dance demonstration by award-winning student dancers Darrian and Mylan and their family. We will have powwow assemblies for all grade levels with an opportunity for all who wish to dance.

Indian Education Program
Last month we started our Native American Studies classes for 1st through 5th grades. Students decorated hand prints to hang on our Tree of Life in the Indian Ed. classroom and learned about Native American Heritage Month. Indian Ed. students will be sharing their knowledge about diverse Native cultures on the Morning Announcements throughout this month. On November 15, we will be celebrating the seventh annual "Rock Your Mocs" Day at Governor Bent, and on November 28 at 6 pm, the APS Native American Leadership Council will present a FREE "Native American Storytelling" program at the UNM Continuing Education Center. Parade of Careers

 

Good evening Governor Bent Families. With our school wide focus on college and career readiness. On Thursday, October 26, our students are encouraged to dress as they would for a career that they would consider pursuing.  If the job has no specific type of dress, then students should make a poster to carry with their career choice labeled in large letters and pictures depicting what they would do in that field of work.  Please remind your child that cartoon characters and superheroes are not careers. No form of weapon, blood, mask or gore may be part of the dress. Clothing should be tasteful, modest, and appropriate for a school environment. Parents are invited to attend our Parade of Careers at 8:30 on the grass field! Have a wonderful evening!

Mighty Milers

 

The running program formerly known as the Mighty Milers has a new name.  This year, we are proud to introduce Rising New York Road Runners, an evolved youth program that is based on a growing body of research in the world of sports.  It is centered on two key concepts:  physical literacy and long-term athlete development (LTAD).  Rising New Yok Road Runners provides a wide range of activities for all ages and abilities to build developmentally appropriate skills as kids move from pre-K through high school.  With its emphasis on goal setting, perseverance and teamwork, Rising New York Road Runners is much more than a running program.  It helps kids discover strengths that extend beyond running, and instills the confidence and motivation to stay active and healthy for life.

Welcome to the Mac Lab! I’m Ms. McLeod, and I have taught technology classes to all the students at Governor Bent for the past 7 years. I love watching the students grow over the years in their technology skills and use, and just as kids. Here's what's happening now in the Mac Lab with the different grades:

 

Kindergarten: The students are practicing using the mouse and keyboard with various websites. They have learned how to double click; click and drag; use the volume keys; and find letters on the keyboard. They are also working on their ABCs using Starfall
ABCs.

 

First and Second Grade: The students have been practicing logging in to their computers with their own username and password. It's the first time for the first graders, so it takes a few weeks to learn. I think they all finally have the hang of it! The
students are using a website called Teach Your Monster to Read to reinforce their reading skills in the classroom.

 

Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade: The students are working on learning how to be responsible digital citizens using a website called Digital Passport. They are learning about cyber bullying; using devices respectfully; online privacy and safety; how to
search successfully; and how to cite websites and follow copyright laws. We will wrap up this unit in the next few weeks and move on to keyboarding practice. Be sure to check out our website at govenorbent.aps.edu for information about the school and links to educational websites for your kids.

Albuquerque Aloft is coming very soon; this event will launch the opening of the 2017 Balloon Fiesta.  We will launch balloons from Governor Bent Elementary School on Friday, October 6 between 7:00am and 7:30am, weather permitting.   This event brings the excitement of ballooning to the community and is an opportunity to educate children about hot air ballooning.

Many of our youngest students miss 10 percent of the school year—about 18 days a year or just two days every month. Chronic absenteeism in kindergarten, and even pre-K, can predict lower test scores, poor attendance and retention in later grades, especially if the problem persists for more than a year. Our 2017-18 school-wide focus will be college and career readiness. Goals of the Library/Media Program

In the library, students develop informational literacy skills. In addition to checking out books, they attend library classes in which they focus on the following goals:

We teach the students how to find and use appropriate library resources. One strategy is to teach students how to select “just right” books books that are neither too easy nor too difficult, but rather at just the right reading level so students enjoy reading without frustration. 

Book Care

We also teach students how to care for library resources responsibly.  We encourage them to

Return or renew their books on time

Keep library books in a special place so they can easily find them

Protect library books from damage by food and liquids, animals, and younger children.

 

Volunteers

There’s something for everyone to do in our library, from a one-time commitment to a regular weekly library shift. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer in our library.

As you may know, Albuquerque will be experiencing a solar eclipse on Monday, August 21 from approximately 10:21 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Teachers and staff here at Governor Bent are aware of Navajo cultural traditions for showing reverence and respect during such times. We are prepared to make special accommodations for families who want their child to observe their traditions during the eclipse on Monday.

 

Please complete the attached permission form and return it to your child’s teacher if you want special accommodations. Participating students will be provided with an early lunch before the eclipse begins and will then sit quietly with our Indian Education Teacher, Ms. Kerkhoff, in her classroom until the eclipse is over.

The New Mexico Immunization Coalition is hosting shot clinics for students July 29-Aug. 12.

 

Immunizations protect children from serious illness. Studies show they are safe and effective in helping children stay healthy. The protection of vaccines far outweighs the small risk of serious complications. Most childhood vaccines are more than 90 percent effective in preventing disease. Contact your child's healthcare provider to discuss possible side effects of certain vaccines.

Vaccines can be obtained through your child's healthcare provider or through a New Mexico Department of Health Public Health office. Check with your school's health office staff if you have questions about required immunizations for school attendance.

NM Immunization Requirement for School Attendance

In an effort to make sure all students are up-topdate on their immunizations, the New Mexico Immunization Coalition is hosting Got Shots from July 29-Aug. 12. Participating providers open their doors to all children, regardless whether they are patients or have insurance. Those who do have insurance are asked to bring their insurance cards as well as shot records.

New Mexico law allows for two types of exemptions for children seeking exemption from required immunizations to enter school. These two exemptions are medical or religious. Parents must submit an approved Certificate of Exemption Form in order to register their child without proof of current vaccinations.

Governor Bent Community, 

 

As we end the 2016-17 school year, I am amazed at how much we have grown as a school and community! We have opened our doors and welcomed our families and community. We have held over fifteen family events ranging from the opportunity to “Run for the Gold “ to viewing stars that are light years away!

 

We have reached out to the community and held multiple family events at local establishments. We developed many partnerships with community organizations to support our students and families. We partnered with local high school and middle school students to mentor our students. We had over eight after school clubs that have enriched the minds of the next Albert Einstein, Georgia O'Keeffe or Pablo Picasso.

 

This year we grew the minds and hearts of our students, families, and staff. Today I can say with pride, that Governor Bent Elementary School is on the road to developing strong college and career structures that support 21st-century learning.

This will be a whole day filled with fitness and fun activities such as: mile run, park activities, inflatable obstacle courses, circuit training, and games for the students. The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) has notified our district that several of our summer K3+ sites have been cut due to budget issues at the State level. 

 

As a result of these cuts, your child’s school:  Governor Bent Elementary School  

 

WILL NOT hold a K3+ Summer program this summer.

We realize that many of you count on the K3+ program for your children and may already be making summer scheduling and day care plans around K3+ schedules.  We wanted you to know as soon as possible for this reason.

 

These NMPED cuts to K3+ are not something APS can control.  If you have questions, please talk to your building principal or contact the APS Service Center at 855-9040.

Run for the Gold!!!

We are excited to be partnering with Kohl’s to put on our 1st Annual “Run for the Gold!” We need many parents to come volunteer to help set up, cheer, and guide students along the track, and help clean up.  We would also love for you to come and cheer on your child!!!

 

If you are coming on campus to help or cheer, please check in at the front office and get a visitor pass.   Volunteers should head to the track to see where they are needed. 

 

       We encourage students to wear their Green Mighty Miler or Governor Bent t-shirt, and any GREEN festive attire. Please watch the weather to see if shorts or sweat pants are appropriate.  Athletic shoes are a must – no sandals, boots, etc.  If it is cold that day, students should dress in layers

 

Running Schedule:

  7:15- 8:15 -- Set up, including putting up decorations.

  8:30- 9:00 -- 4th Grade

  9:10- 9:40 -- 1st Grade

  10:00- 10:30 -- 2nd Grade

  10:40- 11:10 -– Kindergarten

  12:20- 12:50 -- 3rd Grade

  1:15- 1:45 -- 5th Grade (timed mile run)

***Special Education teachers please run with the grade you go to pull-outs with.

 

The course:  Students will be staying on campus and running the dirt track with their class at their scheduled time.
